Redecorating an Old Room

Redecorating an Old Room

Have you ever walked into someone’s home and instantly thought, “wow!”. The colors, the furniture, and the décor give the room that comforting, inviting, homey feeling. One of the joys of owning your own home is having the freedom to decorate anyway you like. Except, some of us, don’t have the keen eye for interior design, and may not know where to start. I am here today to share with you some awesome, yet simple tips on how re-arranging a room can give it that “wow” look you were looking for!

Before you start the process of re-arranging your room, you must have room to move around in. First start out by emptying the room of all furniture, décor, and any rugs. You are now able to see the room for its entirety and can get a good idea of what you are looking to do. Consider what you want this room to be or what activities will be taken place in the room.

Now that you’ve figured out what you want the room to be, you can start placing the furniture inside. A big mistake that people tend to make when designing a room is, they put the furniture up against the walls. This causes conversations to be difficult and creates the only walkway to be in the middle of the conversation area. One way to solve this would be to pull all of the furniture into a cozy grouping for conversation. You can group them in the middle of the room, on an angle or favor one side of the room or the other. Try adding a coffee table, or a nice throw a nice rug into the mix.

Next step is covering up those bare walls. There are several types of wall décor that you can choose from, such as paintings, photographs, art pieces, clocks, signs or mirrors. You can do some experimenting by grouping several pieces of art together for a stronger impact. This makes it easier to create random groupings instead of symmetrical designs, that require careful spacing and measuring. Another awesome way would be to create a gallery wall. This is multiple wall hangs that are all similar in meaning. For examples or more ideas on how to decorate your room with wall décor, you can visit Pinterest.

With the furniture in place and the wall décor chosen, you can move onto adding depth to your wall décor. If you have a grouping of wall accessories or photographs together, try adding a cedar chest or a small table below them. You can dress these up with a nice table topper, and a few of your favorite objects. This is the perfect time to really show off your collections. Whether it is your favorite statue, candles, or decorative lamp these can all be displayed nicely on a small table or chest. If you enjoy collecting rocks or sea shells, you can purchase inexpensive clear glass containers or vases to hold these items. Selecting objects that have different heights can help to add dimension to the area.

Your last and final step is here! If you’re couch or chairs aren’t ready to be replaced, one fun way to make a dramatic change would be to purchase slip covers. They come with many assorted styles, designs and materials for you to choose from. You can find these for an inexpensive price at your local Walmart, Target or Bed, Bath and Beyond.

It is fun to bring a change to your life, especially when it is in the place where you spend a lot of your time. Take advantage of your new arrangement to get rid of accessories you don’t like anymore – such as an old lamp, out dated furniture or those blankets that you’ve had since you were five. Less really can be more!
